Table Topics Proposition Speaker L2 Speaking Role

Table topic debates are mini-debates that provide you an opportunity to
practice debating and impromptu speaking skills. Topics are usually
presented in the form of motions and each topic is debated by two speakers –
Proposition first followed by Opposition.

Proposition speaking in favour of the motion
When called upon to speak on a given motion, you may use PREP to help
you quickly structure the proposition case. You have two minutes to make
your case, therefore, you need to be pithy and organised.

P (Point) – Give a point in favour of the motion.

R (Reason) – Give a reason for your point.

E (Example) – Use an example or a fact to support your point. The burden
of proof is on the proposition.

P (Point) – Conclude with your well-reasoned and well-supported
