Table Topics Opposition Speaker L1 Speaking Role

Table topic debates are mini-debates that provide you an opportunity to
practice debating and impromptu speaking skills. Topics are usually
presented in the form of motions and each topic is debated by two speakers –
Proposition first followed by Opposition.

Opposition speaking against the motion
If you are in opposition, you need to give an argument against the case
that has been put forward by the proposition. You may use CARS to rebut
and build your opposition case.

C (Clash) – Have a clash by pointing out flaws in your opponent’s
argument (Practical? Logical? Ethical? Tried before? Etc.)

A (Alternative) – Give an alternative point for the audience to consider.

R (Reason) – Give a reason that your point is better than your opponent’s.

S (Summary) – conclude by summarising why the audience should reject
the motion
